Mindful Eating, Family Boundaries and Holiday Stress Relief

About This Episode

Content note: This episode contains discussion of diet culture, body image, family conflict, and the true history of Thanksgiving, including violence against indigenous people. Please listen with care.

The holidays are beautiful. They are also complicated. Between the food guilt, the family dynamics, the political arguments, and the pressure to show up perfectly for everyone else, it is easy to lose yourself before the turkey is even carved completely.

This episode is your permission slip to do it differently. To eat with joy and without guilt. To set the boundaries you have been too afraid to hold. And to actually be present for the moments that matter.

In this episode, I share:

  • Why restrictive eating during the holidays does more harm than good and what to do instead

  • The one small addition rule, adding one colorful fruit or vegetable first before anything else

  • The 50-25-25 plate method, 50% colorful vegetables, 25% lean protein, and 25% your favorite starches

  • How to naturally flavor your water and stay hydrated through the season

  • Why slowing down and savoring your food is one of the most powerful things you can do for your health

  • The five-minute digital detox, putting your phone in another room to actually connect with the people you love

  • How to initiate positive conversations that move beyond surface-level small talk

  • Setting and maintaining firm boundaries with family and friends during the holidays

  • The 4-7-8 breathing method for managing stress and activating your parasympathetic nervous system in real time

  • Exact scripts for responding to intrusive questions, political arguments, and body shaming

  • Why no is a complete sentence, and you never owe anyone an explanation

  • A personal story about leaving Thanksgiving early to protect my own peace

  • The true history of Thanksgiving, what we were taught versus what actually happened, and how to honor the day with more intention and awareness

The 4-7-8 Breathing Method

When conflict or stress arises this holiday season, use this simple tool to ground yourself and regulate your nervous system before responding.

Sit with your spine straight and both feet on the ground. Exhale completely through your mouth to begin. Then inhale through your nose for four counts. Hold for seven counts. Exhale through your mouth for eight counts. Repeat four rounds.

The 50-25-25 Plate Method

Fill 50% of your plate with colorful vegetables. Aim to see the rainbow on your plate and include at least a small handful of leafy greens. Fill the next 25% with lean protein. Turkey breast is ideal, but any protein works. Fill the final 25% with your favorite starches. Think roasted sweet potato with cinnamon, butternut squash with butter and brown sugar, or whatever brings you joy.

Then savor your favorite dessert without guilt. Eat slowly. Notice the flavors, textures, and memories it brings up. That is mindful eating.

Boundary Scripts for the Holiday Table

For intrusive personal questions: I appreciate your interest, but that is not something I am discussing right now. Let us talk about something else.

For political arguments: I came here to relax and spend time together. I am going to step away from this conversation.

For body shaming or diet talk: That does not feel good to hear. I am going to change the subject now.

And remember: no is a complete sentence. You do not owe anyone an explanation.
